From physical to mental health, gardening has many benefits to our overall health. It’s why so many of us turned to gardening during the COVID-19 Pandemic. But what if you don’t have the space for an outdoor garden? Or it’s the middle of winter and you can’t build a garden outside just yet? Thankfully, there are still ways to experience the joys of gardening. Indoor gardens are an excellent alternative that will still allow you to enjoy all the benefits that gardening has to bring.
Indoor gardens are not as extensive as outdoor gardens, but you’ll still need the right supplies to get you started.
- A grow light or a south-facing window
- A shallow container with drainage holes
- Potting soil
- Watering can
- Seeds (see below)
What to grow
Even if you have a grow light, your plants will not get as much natural light as they would outside. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t grow any plants. Certain varieties enjoy a bit of shade, and it’s these plants that you should attempt to grow. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Where to grow
You’ll want to place your indoor garden in an area that gets as much light as possible. Ideally, this would be near a south-facing window. Depending on how many plants you’re growing, you can place your containers on your windowsill or a table. However, if you don’t have a south-facing window (which is likely in many apartments), find a window that gets the most light and then place a grow light above your plants.
Caring for your indoor garden
Once you’ve set everything up, the next challenge will be caring for your garden on a day-to-day basis. This means giving your seeds the right amount of light, water, and humidity. However, each plant is different. In order to best care for your plants, you should read the seed packets for care instructions and then do further research online.
