Most of us aren’t born with a green thumb. We need to learn how to care for our plants and keep them alive. Normally we’d turn to books and articles to do this, but in the 21st century, there are now apps designed to help you develop your green thumb. Below are some of the most popular plant care apps that can help you keep your plants alive.
Planta: Free on iOS, Subscription Optional
Planta is one of the most popular plant care apps in the app store, and for good reason. This handy app provides all-around plant care guidance. From water reminders to a plant journal, Planta helps you stay on top of any changes in your plant’s health. It can even recommend plants to buy based on your experience level. When you first download the app, just snap a picture of your plant and Planta will give you all the information you need. Keep in mind, though, that the free version may be limited, and you will need to sign up for the monthly subscription to get all the benefits.
Blossom: Free on iOS, Subscription Optional
Blossom is created and run by The Spruce, a popular garden and lifestyle website. Similar to Planta, Blossom can identify plants just by a picture and give you a detailed care guide as a result. It can also diagnose problems with your plant. Just snap a photo of any problem areas and Blossom will tell you what is wrong and the recommended treatment. Blossom offers a large depth of knowledge, and it has a database of over 10,000 plants with individual water, light, soil, temperature, humidity, potting, and propagation recommendations. It will also remind you when to water, fertilize, and repot your plants based on its own recommendations. Blossom is free to download but also offers a subscription at $6.99/month or $19.99/year.
Planta and Blossom are both iOS only, but Android has options too. PictureThis is available on both the iOS store and Google Play. Like the others, it has a camera-enabled plant identifier and corresponding plant guides. The app’s true strength, however, lies in its diagnostic abilities. It offers an AI that can diagnose your sick plants, and if that’s not enough, there is also a community forum where users can ask and answer questions. With its gold membership ($1.99/week or $4.99/month), you will get access to customized advice from real-life plant experts, weed identifications, and unlimited plant identifications. Its premium tier ($29.99/year) offers that as well as three additional pieces of customized advice.
